On July 24th at Ebrach Abbey, conductor Gerd Schaller led the Philharmonia Festiva in a performance of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9, featuring a four-movement version with a finale supplemented and completed by Schaller himself from original sources. Part of the Ebracher Musiksommer festival, the landmark performance was recorded by Bavarian Radio Studio Franken for release on the Profil label. Hailed by critic Ken Ward as a shattering and revelatory spiritual journey, Schaller’s completed edition earned sustained applause, cementing its success in presenting Bruckner’s final orchestral masterpiece as a fully realized four-movement monumental work.

Gerd Schaller (b. 1965) is a German conductor recognized as a leading interpreter of Anton Bruckner’s music. After studying conducting and holding positions at major German opera houses, he has worked freelance since 2006, frequently guest-conducting internationally. In 2008, he founded the Philharmonie Festiva, with which he pursues major projects including the ambitious BRUCKNER2024 cycle, recording all of Bruckner’s symphonies in every version, as well as sacred works, organ compositions, and previously unknown variants. Schaller also champions forgotten repertoire, reviving works such as Carl Goldmark’s Merlin, and conducts operas by Wagner, Strauss, and Verdi. He serves as Artistic Director of the Ebrach Summer Music Festival, acclaimed for its performances in the abbey’s exceptional acoustics.
