Carl Friedrich Abel (1723–1787) was a prominent pre-Classical symphonist and one of the final master virtuosos of the viola da gamba. Following a fifteen-year tenure with the Dresden court orchestra, he relocated to London in 1759, ultimately earning an appointment as chamber musician to Queen Charlotte. In collaboration with Johann Christian Bach, Abel co-founded the influential "Bach and Abel" concert series in 1765, which introduced Joseph Haydn’s symphonies to English public audiences. A close associate of young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Abel primarily composed instrumental works, including roughly 45 symphonies and overtures—one of which was historically misattributed to Mozart himself.
