Born in Palestine, violinist Ruben Varga (1928–1984) was a recognized child prodigy who maintained a distinguished international music career despite losing his sight to a grenade explosion at age eleven. After performing with the Budapest Philharmonic during World War II and returning to Israel, he moved to the United States, earning citizenship through an act of Congress in 1952. Following his 1949 New York debut, Varga toured extensively across North America, Europe, and South America through the 1970s. He recorded works by Brahms, Paganini, and his own original caprices while also serving as a violin instructor.
