Mizansen is a musical self-portrait by bassoonist Rémy Taghavi that explores his dual French and Iranian heritage. Named after the French and Persian cognate for setting a scene, the album bridges established French wind literature with contemporary Iranian compositions. The French repertoire includes Taghavi's own transcriptions of Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps and Francis Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata, alongside Roger Boutry’s virtuosic Impressions I. The Iranian works highlight the modern vanguard, featuring Reza Vali’s adapted Persian Folk Songs and a newly commissioned piece for bassoon and electronics by Niloufar Nourbakhsh, What Survives. Funded by the University of Massachusetts, the album showcases the bassoon's versatile expressive potential across cultural traditions.

Acclaimed for his exceptional control and technique, bassoonist Rémy Taghavi maintains a distinguished career as an international soloist, orchestral musician, and educator. He currently serves as Principal Bassoon with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra New England, alongside performances with prestigious ensembles such as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A former Carnegie Hall Ensemble Connect fellow and co-director of the Annapolis Chamber Music Festival, Taghavi is an active chamber musician, performing with the ensemble Frisson and co-founding the UMass Amherst faculty group Bandwidth. Currently Assistant Professor of Bassoon at UMass Amherst, Taghavi holds degrees from USC, Juilliard, and Stony Brook University.
