In this recording, violinist Michael Foyle and pianist Iain Burnside explore over a century of British chamber music through the works of Edward Elgar, William Walton, and Thomas Adès. Central to the program are Elgar’s Violin Sonata, a late masterpiece of restless energy and private grief, and Walton’s expansive Sonata, which balances fierce virtuosity with bittersweet tenderness. These large-scale works are paired with the glittering, operatic theatricality of Adès’s Suite from The Tempest and Elgar’s evocative Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin, showcasing a shared thread of lyrical intensity, harmonic depth, and compelling dramatic instinct.
British-Dutch violinist Michael Foyle (b. 1991) is an internationally acclaimed concert soloist, chamber musician, and educator. After winning the Netherlands Violin Competition in 2016, he launched a distinguished career featuring debuts at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and London's Wigmore Hall. Foyle performs regularly with major international orchestras and records extensively for labels like Challenge Records and Delphian, earning critical praise for his releases of Beethoven, Lutosławski, and WWI-era sonatas. A member of Trio Balthasar, he also serves as violin professor at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik und Tanz and the Royal Academy of Music in London, performing on a 1750 Gennaro Gagliano violin.
Renowned as a soloist, chamber artist, and award-winning broadcaster, pianist Iain Burnside is a central figure in British classical music. His extensive career encompasses collaborations with world-class vocalists such as Dame Margaret Price, Joyce DiDonato, and Bryn Terfel, along with a discography exceeding sixty albums that frequently highlights overlooked repertoire. Beyond traditional recitals, Burnside pioneered hybrid music-theatre works centered on iconic composers and spent years hosting BBC Radio 3’s Voices. Currently serving as Artistic Director of the Ludlow English Song Weekend, he remains a dedicated mentor to emerging talents through prestigious international masterclasses, festival juries, and academic appointments.
