Composed in 1913 when Austrian prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold was just 14 years old, the Sinfonietta in B major, Op. 5 is a lavishly orchestrated, 45-minute late-Romantic work matching a full-scale symphony in scope and optimistic character. Although Korngold was a dominant interwar figure, his post-1945 reputation suffered in Austria, where his music was long dismissed through his association with film scoring. Following a broader revival of composers suppressed by Nazism, the Sinfonietta received its post-WWII Austrian premiere in 1996. Its April 2019 performance by the Tonkünstler Orchestra under conductor Fabien Gabel, a collaboration that ultimately led to Gabel's appointment as Music Director, was recorded live at the Vienna Musikverein and released on the orchestra's independent label.

Acclaimed French conductor Fabien Gabel (b. 1975), a former trumpeter turned winner of the 2004 Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, has established a high-profile international career praised for imaginative programming that bridges masterworks and overlooked repertoire. Named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, Gabel served as Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. Currently Music Director of the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, he regularly conducts elite global ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, and Cleveland Orchestra. Highlights of his recent seasons feature his Metropolitan Opera debut, high-profile premieres, and major cinematic projects like scoring Abel Gance’s Napoléon.
