This compelling album features pianist Tianxu An exploring piano sonatas by Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Schumann that illustrate a distinctly German approach to the genre, separate from Viennese Classical conventions. Composed within a transformational 26-year period, these works redefine the sonata through adventurous structural experimentation and heightened expressive depth. Central to An’s vision is a meticulous fidelity to the composers' precise markings—including dynamic nuances, pedaling, and phrasing—to uncover how these details drive musical interpretation. Recorded in 2024, this release highlights An's thoughtful engagement with the repertoire, masterfully balancing its rigorous intellectual framework with profound expressive breadth.

Born in 1999 in Baoding, China, pianist Tianxu An gained international renown after winning Fourth Prize and a special prize at the 2019 XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School, An has performed as a soloist with world-class ensembles like The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Zubin Mehta. His critically acclaimed discography with labels like Alpha Classics showcases his profound musical affinity for Romantic repertoire. Currently represented by Armstrong Music & Arts, An balances a global concert career with his faculty role at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
