Since taking fourth prize at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, pianist Lucas Debargue has forged a distinctive career path, most recently turning his attention to the music of George Gershwin. Joined by the Orchestre de Paris under Elim Chan, Debargue delivers a sharp, jazz-infused rendition of the Piano Concerto in F alongside a supple Rhapsody in Blue featuring original, partially improvised cadenzas. Central to the album are Debargue’s twelve original virtuoso études on Gershwin standards, which ingeniously reimagine classic tunes into diverse forms, ranging from a Parisian waltz to a Bach-inspired fugue and a whirlwind set of variations on Summertime.

French pianist and composer Lucas Debargue (born 1990) followed an unconventional path to international acclaim, combining literature and philosophy studies before dedicating himself to piano under teacher Rena Shereshevskaya. His career launched at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, where his distinct artistic vision won fourth prize and the Moscow Music Critics’ Award. A Sony Classical recording artist, Debargue regularly performs in major world venues and prestigious festivals alongside leading conductors. Known for compelling interpretations informed by art and literature, his repertoire spans core classics to lesser-known composers like Medtner, Szymanowski, and Magin. Debargue is also an active composer with over twenty chamber and solo works.
