Scheduled for full release in October 2026 as part of the complete Bach ancestral catalog, the EP Heinrich Bach: Sonatas & Organ Works highlights the rare surviving music of Johann Sebastian Bach's great-uncle. Longtime organist at Arnstadt, Heinrich Bach's legacy relies on just three surviving organ chorales—salvaged via 19th-century collections—and two five-part instrumental sonatas preserved in the 1662 Partiturbuch Ludwig. Representative of mid-17th-century stylistic conventions, these ensemble pieces remain unique to his family generation, though their attribution is contested by alternate archive sources linking them to Johann Heinrich Schmelzer.
Heinrich Bach (1615–1692) was a German organist, composer, and patriarch of the Bach family’s Arnstadt line. Educated by his older brother Johannes following their father’s early death, Bach served as a Ratsmusikant in Erfurt before securing the organist position at Arnstadt’s St. Mary's and Upper Churches in 1641—a post he held for over five decades until his death. In 1642, he married Eva Hoffmann, with whom he raised a prominent musical family; three of his sons (Johann Christoph, Johann Michael, and Johann Günther) became notable musicians, continuing the distinguished family legacy.
