In late 1853, a pivotal encounter occurred when Robert Schumann met the young Johannes Brahms, famously declaring him a genius who eclipsed all peers. Pianist Paolo Ehrenheim unites three works from this tightly linked historical window to illuminate the composers' profound personal and artistic connections. The program pairs Brahms’s early Sonata Op. 5, likely performed during that initial meeting, with Schumann’s final solo piano work, Gesänge der Frühe, known for its complex and enigmatic aura. Completing this web of "elective affinities" are Clara Schumann’s Variations, Op. 20, composed on a theme from Robert’s Bunte Blätter, the very same theme Brahms would brilliantly variationize just one year later.

Italian pianist Paolo Ehrenheim (b. 2001) is an award-winning concert artist whose accolades include top honors at the Premio Venezia, Premio Brunelli, and the "Giuseppe Martucci" International Prize. He studied at the "Giuseppe Verdi" Conservatory in Milan under Luca Schieppati, alongside advanced studies with Elisso Virsaladze and Maurizio Baglini. Ehrenheim has performed as a soloist in prominent venues, including the Teatro La Fenice, Teatro alla Scala, and Palazzo del Quirinale, collaborating with major Italian orchestras like the Filarmonia Veneta. In addition to his orchestral concertos and solo recitals, he maintains an active performance career as a passionate chamber musician.
