Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) was a prominent German composer, pianist, and conductor of the Romantic era whose works remain foundational to the modern classical repertoire. Known for integrating traditional structural forms with complex counterpoint and rhythmic vitality, Brahms composed extensive symphonies, concertos, chamber works, and Lieder. Mentored by Robert and Clara Schumann, he built a distinguished career based in Vienna, where he also championed early music. Despite being categorized as a conservative during the War of the Romantics, his masterly use of developing variation deeply influenced later modernists like Arnold Schoenberg, cementing his legacy alongside Bach and Beethoven.
