Dragon’s Domain Records presents The Lalo Schifrin Collection: Volume 2, featuring original scores by the acclaimed composer for two classic feature films: Escape to Athena (1979) and Tank (1984). Directed by George P. Cosmatos, Escape to Athena is a World War II adventure set on the Greek island of Rhodes, where Schifrin’s score captures the film’s blend of wartime tension and comedic action using bold orchestration, lively percussion, and Mediterranean motifs. Marvin J. Chomsky’s Tank stars James Garner as a career soldier using a Sherman tank to rescue his framed son from a corrupt sheriff, complemented by Schifrin’s dramatic orchestral writing and driving rhythmic themes.

Born into a musical family in Argentina as the son of Buenos Aires Philharmonic concertmaster Luis Schifrin, Lalo Schifrin (1932–2025) pursued law alongside classical music training before honing his craft at the Paris Conservatory under Olivier Messiaen. In the 1950s, he built a parallel career as a professional jazz pianist and arranger, forming a big band in Buenos Aires where Dizzy Gillespie discovered him and recruited him to move to the United States in 1958. Schifrin subsequently forged an extraordinary legacy, composing over 100 film and television scores, including iconic works such as Mission: Impossible, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, Dirty Harry, and the Rush Hour franchise.
