In a new CD release, Laurence Equilbey revives the historic double orchestra tradition by combining the forces of the Insula orchestra and Insula camerata. Inspired by Beethoven’s practice of writing for grand 19th-century festival ensembles that often exceeded one hundred musicians, this monumental recording captures the massive scale and dramatic vigor of large-format orchestral performance. Equilbey leverages the combined power of both ensembles to recreate an authentic historical sound world, delivering a unique, high-energy musical experience that highlights the rich textures and commanding dynamic range inherent to Beethoven’s large-scale compositional vision.

Renowned French conductor Laurence Equilbey (b. 1962) is celebrated for her rigorous yet innovative approach across symphonic, operatic, and choral repertoires. Trained in Paris, Vienna, and London under mentors like Eric Ericson and Jorma Panula, she has guest-conducted premier international ensembles, including the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Concerto Köln, and the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg. In 2012, Equilbey founded Insula orchestra, a period-instrument ensemble focused on Classical and pre-Romantic music, which became a resident orchestra at La Seine Musicale in 2017. Alongside leading the vocal ensemble accentus and championing contemporary works, she serves as Artistic Director and Director of Education for the Paris Conservatory's Department for Young Singers.
