Composed in 1866 as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky assumed his professorship at the Moscow Conservatory, Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Winter Daydreams, Op. 13, represents the composer's earliest major work. Dedicated to Nikolai Rubinstein, the symphony's creation proved arduous, exacting a heavy physical and emotional toll due to creative exhaustion and Tchaikovsky's frustration with conservative Russian academic forms. Despite these struggles, the symphony achieved immediate acclaim for establishing a distinctly Russian symphonic identity while demonstrating rigorous formal mastery. Tchaikovsky maintained a deep lifelong affection for the piece, regarding its core substance as superior to many of his later, more mature compositions.

St. Petersburg–born conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky is acclaimed as one of today’s most brilliant conductors, celebrated for his expansive symphonic and operatic repertoire ranging from classic masterworks to rarely performed compositions. A graduate with honors from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire, Kochanovsky previously served as Chief Conductor of the State Safonov Philharmonic and conducted extensively at the Mikhailovsky and Mariinsky Theatres. Appointed Chief Conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie starting in the 2024/25 season, he regularly collaborates with premier international ensembles—including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia—alongside world-renowned soloists, opera houses, and major summer festivals such as the Verbier Festival.
