Ensemble Vox Luminis presents the only two Requiem masses composed by Roland de Lassus among his more than eighty mass settings. The four-part Missa pro defunctis (published in 1577) is showcased alongside an abbey manuscript variant transposed for low male voices featuring an additional Dies Irae. In contrast, the five-part Requiem (published in 1589) offers a richer, brighter texture. By pairing these uncommissioned funeral works, Vox Luminis highlights the striking coloristic dynamic between the somber gravity of the four-part setting and the luminous warmth of the five-part composition.
Founded in 2004 by bass Lionel Meunier, early music ensemble Vox Luminis is internationally celebrated for its rich, distinctive timbre in 16th to 18th-century English, Italian, and German repertoires. Performing over 70 annual concerts worldwide, the group ranges from intimate continuo ensembles to 40-voice productions, dedicated to uncovering hidden gems alongside masterworks. Their critically acclaimed discography includes two Gramophone Awards, alongside numerous Diapasons d’Or and international prizes. Having performed in prestigious venues like London’s Wigmore Hall and the Berlin Philharmonie, the ensemble maintains key residencies, collaborates regularly with the Freiburger Barockorchester, and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with new commissions and releases.
