Composed in June 1786, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 493, was completed nine months after publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister released him from a three-quartet contract due to the commercial difficulty of its companion, K. 478. Despite Hoffmeister's concerns, Mozart finished the work, which has since become a staple of the chamber repertoire. Historically condensed on single vinyl record sides by omitting repeats to maintain a 24-minute runtime, full-repeat renditions total around 30 minutes. Today, K. 493 is frequently recorded on both modern and period instruments, most commonly paired with K. 478 by prominent chamber ensembles.
