Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) was a preeminent Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, and impresario whose innovations significantly shaped Western classical music. Renowned for formalizing the solo concerto format and advancing orchestration, violin technique, and programmatic music, Vivaldi created a vast repertoire that includes sacred choral works, over fifty operas, and his celebrated series of violin concertos, The Four Seasons. Much of his music was composed for the young women of Venice's Ospedale della Pietà. An ordained priest excused from public Mass due to ill health, Vivaldi achieved widespread acclaim across Europe during his lifetime, though he ultimately died in poverty in Vienna. Following a long period of obscurity, a major twentieth-century revival restored his scholarly standing and enduring worldwide popularity.
