Boris Lyatoshynsky (1895–1968) is widely recognized as a premier twentieth-century Ukrainian composer who blended nineteenth-century European romanticism with early modernism. A distinguished professor at the Kyiv Conservatoire, he also held key positions in Soviet musical organizations. His First String Quartet, written under the tutelage of Reinhold Glière, reflects his teacher's stylistic influence, while his 1922 Second String Quartet showcases his mature, independent voice. Both works seamlessly incorporate Russian and Ukrainian folk motifs within traditional four-movement structures. These pieces are performed by the NotaBene Chamber Group, a dynamic Kyiv-based collective formed in 2015 that champions classical and contemporary chamber repertoire.

Founded in 2015 and affiliated with Ukraine's National House of Music since 2022, the NotaBene Chamber Group is a premier ensemble of award-winning Ukrainian musicians. The versatile group performs a broad range of chamber literature, from Viennese Classicism to contemporary academic music, across diverse instrumental combinations. Renowned for championing Ukrainian heritage, the ensemble actively records landmark works from the late twentieth century, collaborates with international artists, and performs at prestigious European festivals. Currently, in partnership with the Liatoshynsky Foundation, NotaBene is undertaking a monumental project to record the complete chamber works of Ukrainian composer Borys Lyatoshynsky, furthering their mission to elevate Ukrainian classical music on the global stage.
