Ruth Gipps (1921–1999) was a British composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist. Born in the United Kingdom, she was a highly accomplished musician, having studied at the Royal College of Music. Known for her significant contributions to 20th-century British classical music, Gipps composed symphonic works, chamber music, and choral pieces. She was particularly admired for her symphonies and orchestral compositions, which often reflected her keen musicality and expressive depth. A pioneering female composer in a male-dominated field, Gipps also made a mark as a conductor, particularly for her work with the BBC and other ensembles. Throughout her career, she overcame gender barriers, earning recognition as both a composer and an advocate for classical music.
