The fate of French women composers of the past is now drawing significant interest, serving as a pretext for the rediscovery of a captivating repertoire and endearing personalities whose life journeys were often out of the ordinary—especially in eras when pursuing a musical career was far from an obvious path for women.

Beyond the often-overlooked repertoire it presents, this album also offers a fresh perspective by revisiting works originally written for violin and piano, here transcribed for flute. Among these are the masterful and flamboyant Sonata by Marguerite Canal—the second woman to win the Prix de Rome in 1920—and the delicate, humor-tinged Sonatina by Pauline Viardot, a celebrated singer and muse to many great artists of the Romantic era.

One of the few works on the album originally composed for flute and piano, Claude Arrieu’s Sonatina holds an undisputed place in the instrument’s repertoire. Written the same year as Dutilleux’s Sonatina, it had the honor of being premiered by Jean-Pierre Rampal, one of the leading figures of the French flute school.
