The composer Claude Debussy was always searching for ‘new forms’ and never wanted to ‘enclose his music in a world that was too correct’. In this way, he also coaxed unimagined sound worlds from the grand piano. From an early age, the Frenchman sat at the piano. His most important early teacher was Mauté de Fleurville, a student of Chopin. ‘I have her to thank for the little piano playing I know,’ Debussy once said, playing his cards very low. Fleurville also prepared her protégé for the Paris Conservatoire, where he was accepted at the age of ten.

He then refned his skills under Antoine Marmontel, a luminary of French piano music. In addition, the younger Albert Lavignac was one of his teachers. His Galop-Marche for piano for eight hands was already popular with students at the time, as was playing together. In this respect, Debussy was well acquainted with more than just two-handed piano music. In addition to original works for piano for four hands on one or two instruments, he also initially conceived his orchestral works on the keys. And that is precisely what makes this album so exciting, because it allows us to eavesdrop on the composer‘s studio.
