For over 25 years, the L’Orfeo Barockorchester, led by founder Michi Gaigg, has been a leading force in the Early Music scene. Praised for its individuality and dynamic approach, the ensemble combines musical curiosity, expressive performance, and stylistic diversity. With over 40 acclaimed recordings, including world premieres and award-winning opera productions, L’Orfeo’s repertoire spans from Baroque to early Romantic music. Recent highlights include Schubert symphonies, Haydn’s L’incontro improvviso, and Mozart’s From Zero to Hero. The orchestra has performed at top festivals and venues across Europe and beyond, including the Elbphilharmonie, Salzburg Festival, and the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel.
Carin van Heerden, born in Cape Town, studied recorder and baroque oboe in Germany and the Netherlands with renowned teachers. A winner of international competitions, including the ARD Music Competition (1988), she co-founded the L’Orfeo Barockorchester and performs regularly in Europe and South Africa. An active soloist and chamber musician, she also leads the L’Orfeo Wind Ensemble and tours with the recorder consort Element of Prime. She has recorded for labels like cpo, Cavalli, and Sony. Van Heerden taught at top institutions, led the Early Music Institute in Linz, and continues to shape the field through concerts, translations, and jury work.
