Before the publication of his Hungarian Dances in their original version for piano four hands, Johannes Brahms was hardly known to the educated middle classes, but the works ensured that the composer became a household name. In their subsequent orchestral versions, the Dances entered the repertoire of prestigious concert orchestras and, after music had become technically reproducible, went on to become even more massively popular. On this CD, BR-KLASSIK presents Brahms'the Hungarian Dances Nos. 11–21 in their orchestral versions, in a studio production with the Munich Radio Orchestra under its former chief conductor Roberto Abbado.

Roberto Abbado, acclaimed conductor and recipient of the “Premio Abbiati,” will become Music Director of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra in 2026. Currently Chief Conductor of the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, he studied under Franco Ferrara and made his U.S. debut in 1991. Abbado has led major American and European orchestras and collaborated with renowned soloists like Yo-Yo Ma and Lang Lang. His past roles include Musical Director in Munich, Valencia, and Parma. A champion of contemporary music, he has premiered numerous operas worldwide, conducting works by composers such as Berio, Henze, Messiaen, and Sciarrino.
