This new album of piano sonatas from the Georgian pianist Mariam Batsashvili begins and ends with two radically different approaches to the familiar sonata form. First is Haydn’s Sonata in D major No.37 published in 1780: a virtuoso piece in three-movement Classical Viennese style. Concluding the recording is Liszt’s “Dante” Sonata of 1849: in a single movement, highly programmatic and improvisatory in nature. Between them are Mozart’s last sonata – the D major K.576 – and Beethoven’s “Appassionata” Sonata, “which was completely revolutionary in the way he used the entirety of the keyboard,” Batsashvili says

Georgian pianist Mariam Batsashvili, known for her charisma and expressive depth, has performed in over 30 countries and at prestigious venues like Berlin, London, and Vienna. A winner of the Franz Liszt Competitions (Weimar 2011, Utrecht 2014), her career has been marked by a focus on Liszt’s music, showcased in her 2019 album Chopin Liszt.
