Young Czech musicians Daniel Matejča and Jan Schulmeister collaborate on a new album showcasing 20th-century Czech repertoire. Following individual international successes—Matejča’s acclaimed Supraphon debut of Ysaÿe Sonatas (2023) and Schulmeister’s Third Prize at the 2023 Cliburn Junior Competition—the duo won the chamber music category at Concertino Praga 2023, leading to this joint recording. The album features Bohuslav Martinů’s technically demanding Czech Rhapsody and jazz- and impressionism-influenced First Violin Sonata, as well as Luboš Fišer’s emotionally charged sonata The Hands, written during communist-era oppression. Their interpretations highlight the depth and vitality of Czech modern music.

Daniel Matejča, born in Liberec in 2005, began studying violin at age four and has since become one of the most promising Czech violinists of his generation. A student of Ivan Straus, he has won numerous prestigious competitions, including the Telemann Violin Competition (2020), Jugend Musiziert (2019), and the Eurovision Young Talents (2022). His acclaimed 2023 debut album of Ysaÿe sonatas on Supraphon received praise from Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine, and was a top-selling classical CD in the Czech Republic. Daniel has performed internationally, collaborated with major orchestras, and participated in top festivals and masterclasses with renowned violinists.

Jan Schulmeister (b. 2006) is a rising Czech pianist studying under Martina Schulmeisterová at the P. J. Vejvanovský Conservatoire in Kroměříž. He has earned top prizes at over 40 international competitions across Europe and the U.S., including the César Franck, Piano Talents, and Manhattan International competitions. A three-time Concertino Praga finalist, his recent triumph includes Third Prize at the 2023 Junior Cliburn Competition in Dallas. Schulmeister has performed across Europe and the U.S., and appeared at major Czech festivals like Prague Spring and Dvořák Prague. He collaborates in chamber music with violinist Daniel Matejča and the Wihan Quartet and holds scholarships from major Czech foundations.
