Vladimir Feltsman, born in Moscow in 1952, is a renowned pianist, conductor, and educator. Trained at the Moscow Conservatory and later in conducting at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he gained early acclaim after winning the Grand Prix at the 1971 Margaret Long Piano Competition. Due to his opposition to Soviet artistic restrictions, he was banned from public performance after applying to emigrate in 1979, eventually leaving the USSR in 1987. His Carnegie Hall debut that year launched an acclaimed international career. Feltsman’s wide-ranging repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary music, and he has recorded over 70 albums. He teaches at SUNY New Paltz and Mannes College.
