Cellist Ophélie Gaillard and the Pulcinella Orchestra pay tribute to Luigi Boccherini, the pioneering Italian composer and virtuoso cellist, in a double album that spans concertos, sonatas, and symphonies. Born in Tuscany, Boccherini's European journey led him to the courts of Prussia and Spain, where he enriched cello repertoire with music infused with Andalusian rhythms and Madrid’s street melodies—paralleling Goya’s visual artistry. Following in the footsteps of Bach’s landmark cello suites, Boccherini helped elevate the cello’s stature in 18th-century music. The album also features soprano Sandrine Piau in a deeply expressive performance of Boccherini’s Stabat Mater for string quintet and voice.

Ophélie Gaillard (b. 1974, Paris) is a distinguished French cellist known for her versatility and expressive depth. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, she earned top prizes in chamber music, modern cello, and baroque cello, and also holds degrees in pedagogy and musicology. She gained international recognition after winning third prize at the 1998 International Bach Competition and being named “Revelation: Solo Instrumentalist of the Year” at the 2003 Victoires de la musique classique. A noted interpreter of solo cello repertoire, her acclaimed recordings include works by Bach and Britten. In 2005, she founded Pulcinella, a period-instrument Baroque ensemble.
