François-René Duchâble (b. 1952) is a French pianist who began his acclaimed career early, winning first prize at the Conservatoire de Paris at 13 and placing 11th at the Queen Elisabeth Competition at 16. Encouraged by Arthur Rubinstein, Duchâble built a successful international career, performing major concertos and solo works by Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, and others. He played with leading orchestras and at major festivals across Europe and North America. In 2003, protesting the elitism of classical music, Duchâble announced he would abandon formal recitals, destroy pianos and his concert attire, and instead perform informal electronic keyboard concerts throughout France.
