Dragon’s Domain Records presents Too Late the Hero, featuring Gerald Fried’s dynamic score for the 1970 World War II film directed by Robert Aldrich. Set in the Pacific in 1942, the story follows Lt. Sam Lawson, a reluctant interpreter assigned to a British commando unit tasked with destroying a Japanese radio post to protect an approaching U.S. convoy. The mission escalates upon discovering a secret Japanese airfield. Fried, known for his collaborations with Aldrich, composed a richly textured score blending large orchestral forces, synthesizers, and exotic instruments, showcasing his talent for rhythmic invention and atmospheric tension.

Gerald Fried, born in February 1928 in the Bronx, was a trailblazing composer whose career began after studying oboe at Juilliard. He collaborated early with friend Stanley Kubrick, scoring five of his films including The Killing and Paths of Glory. Fried later moved to Los Angeles, where he composed for numerous films and iconic 1960s TV shows like Star Trek, Gilligan’s Island, and Mission: Impossible. His acclaimed work on the 1977 miniseries Roots earned him an Emmy. Fried remained active into the 1980s, composing for TV and documentaries. He died in 2023, leaving a lasting legacy in film and television music.
