BSX Digital presents the original soundtrack for The Passage, composed by Michael J. Lewis for the 1979 British World War II film directed by J. Lee Thompson. The story follows a Basque farmer aiding a scientist and his family in fleeing Nazi-occupied France across the Pyrenees, pursued by a sadistic SS officer. Lewis’s sweeping, symphonic score intensifies the film’s tension while evoking the majesty of the snow-covered landscapes. Notably, the piece “Apassionata” from the score was featured during the 'In Memoriam' segment of the 70th Academy Awards, conducted by Jerry Goldsmith.
Michael J. Lewis is an Emmy-winning Welsh composer known for his work in film, television, Broadway, and choral music. Trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he transitioned from teaching to full-time composition at age 24. Prolific during the late 1970s and early 1980s, his credits include Theatre of Blood, The Medusa Touch, Julius Caesar, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which earned him an Emmy. He also created music for major advertising campaigns in both the UK and U.S. Following personal tragedy in 1994, Lewis focused on sacred and traditional music and now resides in Mississippi, continuing to compose and record.
