With pieces from yesteryear and today, from Francis Poulenc to Benjamin Britten, Jonathan Harvey, György Ligeti, Olivier Messiaen, Frank Martin, and Aurélien Dumont, the Aedes Ensemble treats us to its Ludus Verbalis, an eclectic panorama of masterpieces for a capella choir. The ambitious program is directed by Mathieu Romano. It is the final installment in a tetralogy of recordings dedicated to 20th– and 21st-century vocal music.
Founded in 2005 by Mathieu Romano, Aedes is a French vocal ensemble dedicated to choral music across eras and genres, from Baroque to contemporary works, often in innovative staged or cross-disciplinary formats. Known for its artistic collaborations and bold programming—including ventures into French chanson, flamenco, and, in 2024–2025, a new project with Nō master Masato Matsuura—the ensemble performs in top venues like the Philharmonie de Paris and internationally at festivals in Vienna, Amsterdam, and Granada. Committed to outreach and education, Aedes promotes choral practice in schools and communities. Its 20th anniversary season in 2025–2026 will feature Poulenc’s complete a cappella works.
