This year’s Summer Night Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic features three notable débuts: conductor Tugan Sokhiev, tenor Piotr Beczała, and the Vienna Boys Choir, in a diverse program spanning the mid-19th to early 20th century. While this marks their first appearance in this concert, Sokhiev and Beczała have long-standing ties to the orchestra, dating back to 2009 and 1996 respectively. Founded in 1842, the Vienna Philharmonic is steeped in a 183-year tradition, operating with full artistic and administrative independence, governed democratically by its own members.

Tugan Sokhiev (b. 1977) is a prominent Russian conductor who studied under Ilya Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He served as Music Director of the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse (2008–2022) and the Bolshoi Theatre (2014–2022). A frequent guest with top orchestras such as the Berlin, Vienna, and Munich Philharmonics, Sokhiev also appears regularly in the U.S. and Japan. His discography includes acclaimed recordings with the Toulouse orchestra and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Passionate about education, he founded a conducting academy in Toulouse and mentors young musicians through several European institutions. In 2023, he led Dresden Staatskapelle’s New Year’s concerts.
