Ensemble Caprice undertakes a creative yet scholarly project reconstructing Antonio Vivaldi’s lost “national” concertos—La Francia, L’Inghilterra, La Spagna, and Il Gran Mogol. Documented in an 18th-century catalogue, only Il Gran Mogol resurfaced in 2010; the others vanished. Using his mastery of Baroque style, Matthias Maute reimagines them as Vivaldi might have written. Each reconstructed concerto is introduced by a historically inspired prelude reflecting its national character, with the program completed by La primavera, a recorder fantasy after Vivaldi’s Spring. The result is a vibrant homage to Vivaldi’s world, blending authenticity with imaginative reconstruction.

Ensemble Caprice, founded over 30 years ago by flautist Matthias Maute, is acclaimed worldwide for its innovative programming and dynamic performances. The ensemble has toured extensively across four continents, appearing at leading festivals in Europe, Israel, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, including London’s Lufthansa Festival, the Boston Early Music Festival, and the Library of Congress. Based in Montreal, it also presents a regular concert series at Bourgie Hall. With some 20 recordings on major labels, Ensemble Caprice has earned numerous distinctions, including a Juno Award, multiple Prix Opus, and international recognition from Gramophone and Germany’s Echo Klassik. It is celebrated as one of today’s premier baroque ensembles.
