Reference Recordings releases a special live recording of Mozart’s Requiem featuring the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck, with Academy Award–winning actor F. Murray Abraham as narrator. Honeck’s unique conception, Requiem: Mozart’s Death in Words and Music, integrates spoken text into Mozart’s score, a vision first presented at Heinz Hall in 2012 and later at Carnegie Hall in 2014. Abraham, famed for his Oscar-winning role as Salieri in Amadeus, brings theatrical depth to the performance. Recorded in 2023 at Heinz Hall in state-of-the-art audiophile sound, the album includes Honeck’s illuminating program notes, offering fresh insight into Mozart’s final masterpiece.
Manfred Honeck (b. 1958, Austria) studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and gained formative experience with the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestra. A former assistant to Claudio Abbado, he later worked at Zurich Opera House, where he won the European Conductor’s Award, before holding posts with the MDR Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, and Staatsoper Stuttgart. Since 2008, he has been Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, earning Grammy® acclaim and international recognition. Honeck is also in high demand as a guest conductor, leading top ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, and major American orchestras.
