Max Richter (b. 1966) is a German-born British composer and pianist, celebrated as one of today’s most influential musical voices. Classically trained in Edinburgh, London, and under Luciano Berio in Florence, his work spans solo albums, orchestral scores, ballet, theatre, installations, and film. His debut Memoryhouse (2002) and The Blue Notebooks (2004) gained landmark recognition, while his monumental SLEEP has been performed worldwide. Richter’s “Recomposed” Four Seasons (2012) earned an ECHO Award and classical chart success. His music is embraced by leading ballet companies and acclaimed in film and TV, with credits including Ad Astra, Arrival, Black Mirror, and The Leftovers.
Max Richter’s Sleep Circle, released on 5 September 2025, marks the tenth anniversary of his acclaimed project SLEEP. Described by the composer as “SLEEP distilled,” the 90-minute album guides listeners through the hypnagogic state—the threshold between wakefulness and dreaming. Shaped by insights from live performances, the 24 tracks form a structural arc reflecting the natural 90-minute REM cycle. Highlights include “Dream 11 / Moth-Like Stars” and “Non-Eternal.” Recorded at Studio Richter Mahr in Oxfordshire, the album offers a more intimate, focused exploration of SLEEP, inviting listeners to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their inner world through music.
