_____________________
In 2019, Philip Glass composed incidental music for a Broadway production of King Lear, choosing the string quartet for its emotional depth. This became his ninth work for the medium, channeling the tragedy’s turmoil, violence, and despair. To shape the score, Glass studied the historical backdrop of 1606, marked by the Gunpowder Plot and political upheaval, which he felt mirrored the play’s themes of chaos and destruction. He attended rehearsals daily, writing music at night, creating a soundscape that blends his signature repetitive patterns, shifting harmonies, and stark textures, culminating in an ominous storm that underscores Shakespeare’s drama.
