Franco Vittadini (1884–1948), one of Pavia’s most important musicians, was director of the city’s Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali—now named in his honor—from 1924 until his death. Organist Maria Cecilia Farina interprets his works on historical instruments with scholarly precision. Vittadini’s organ music rarely adopts grand or virtuosic tones; instead, it reflects a subdued, introspective style. Marked by gentle melancholy and a twilight-like atmosphere reminiscent of poets Guido Gozzano and Sergio Corazzini, his compositions convey a deep, contemplative faith through their nostalgic and serene character rather than through dramatic or overtly liturgical expression.
Maria Cecilia Farina, born in Milan into a family of musicians from Pavia, is an Italian organist and professor at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory. Trained in organ, piano, harpsichord, and choral conducting, she studied with renowned teachers including Michel Chapuis, Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, Harald Vogel, and Michael Radulescu. She later refined her harpsichord technique under Kenneth Gilbert at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. A prizewinner in organ and harpsichord competitions, Farina has performed internationally across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. She also holds a doctorate in literature from the University of Pavia and specializes in performing on historical Italian-Corsican organs.
