Friedrich Kiel (1821–1885) was a highly respected composition professor in Berlin, teaching notable musicians such as Stanford and Paderewski. Known for his open-minded and non-dogmatic approach, he wrote music that, while essentially conservative, reflected the finest influences of his era, including Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Liszt. The Suite reveals a Beethovenian character, while the Six Fugues display a more lyrical treatment of the form. His refined craftsmanship and elegant style have kept his chamber and keyboard works valued among performers and listeners. A digital EP of the Six Impromptus is also available for streaming and download.
Elizabeth Haughan is a Scottish-born pianist active as both soloist and collaborator, performing at major UK venues including the Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and the V&A Museum. With a strong interest in creative programming, she has explored repertoire beyond the traditional canon and worked on projects linking song with sign language, appearing as a Young Artist at Leeds Song Festival and SongEasel, and performing for several CBSO festivals. She studied at the Liszt Ferenc Academy in Budapest as a Weingarten Scholar, and at the Royal College of Music and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, earning multiple awards for chamber music and song accompaniment.
