Edward Gregson, an award-winning English composer of international renown, celebrates his 80th birthday in 2025. Among the leading composers of his generation, his music is widely performed, recorded, and broadcast. This album features three major concertos alongside two shorter works for piano and orchestra: A Song for Bram, honoring conductor Bramwell Tovey, and A Song for Sue, a 2024 tribute to his wife reworking his earlier Concertante Nocturne. The program includes his widely performed Tuba Concerto (1977), the Concerto for Viola and String Orchestra “Three Goddesses” (2023), and the Oboe Concerto “A Vision in a Dream” (2020), inspired by Coleridge’s Kubla Khan, blending narrative and symphonic color in a poetic manner.
Edward Gregson, born in 1945 in Sunderland, is a leading English composer renowned for orchestral, chamber, instrumental, choral, and brass works, as well as music for theatre, film, and television. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and London University, his compositions have been performed and recorded worldwide, including major series on Chandos and Naxos, and a six-volume survey of his brass band music. Recent works include concertos, symphonic variations, and pieces for children’s choir. Gregson has held key academic roles, including Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music, and has received numerous honors, awards, and fellowships, alongside contributions as conductor, jury member, and scholar.
