Håkan Hardenberger and Roland Pöntinen have collaborated for over forty years, performing, touring, and recording together while exploring diverse repertoire ideas. Their programmes often blend contrasting works from different eras and genres, reflecting interests in jazz, film, and other arts. This recital features contemporary compositions, including Staffan Storm’s Three Autumns, inspired by Anna Akhmatova’s poetry, as well as pieces by Mark-Anthony Turnage, HK Gruber, and two works by Pöntinen. The programme also includes George Enescu’s Légende, arrangements of American classics, and Ornette Coleman’s Chanting, a jazz favourite that is always uniquely improvised in their performances.

Håkan Hardenberger (b. 1961, Malmö, Sweden) is a world-renowned trumpeter and conductor. He began trumpet studies at eight and trained at the Paris Conservatoire with Pierre Thibaud and in Los Angeles with Thomas Stevens. Over a 40-year career, he has expanded the trumpet repertoire, inspiring composers such as Birtwistle, Ligeti, Henze, Grime, and Turnage. Hardenberger performs with leading orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, London Symphony, and Boston Symphony, collaborating with top conductors. He served as Artistic Director of the Malmö Chamber Music Festival (2016–2018) and is a professor at the Malmö Conservatoire, celebrated for his virtuosity, innovation, and dedication to contemporary trumpet music.

Roland Pöntinen (b. 1963, Stockholm) is a Swedish pianist and composer, trained at Adolf Fredrik’s Music School, the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, and Indiana University under Menahem Pressler, György Sebok, and Elisabeth Leonskaya. His repertoire spans from Bach to Ligeti, with a focus on 19th- and early 20th-century composers such as Debussy, Busoni, Szymanowski, and Rachmaninov. Renowned for chamber music collaborations, he has worked with artists including Håkan Hardenberger, Janine Jansen, and Barbara Hendricks, and performed globally at venues like Wigmore Hall and the Frick Collection. A prolific recording artist with nearly 100 albums, Pöntinen is also a composer, with works performed by major orchestras and tailored for collaborators like Hardenberger.
