This collection of sacred works celebrates music written for the Christmas liturgy by leading Venetian composers of the 16th and 17th centuries, from Andrea Gabrieli to Francesco Cavalli. Alongside these figures stand masters such as Giovanni Gabrieli, Monteverdi, Schütz, Bassano, and Grandi, reflecting the rich evolution of Venetian sacred music. Natale veneziano marks the beginning of a new series from Il Pomo d’Oro, highlighting the ensemble’s choir under Giuseppe Maletto, who has directed its vocal projects since 2021. Following three acclaimed Arcana albums, this release showcases the ensemble’s deep engagement with early music traditions.
Founded in 2012 by Gesine Lübben and Giulio d’Alessio, Il Pomo d’Oro unites leading young specialists in historically informed performance. Known for its stylistic precision, virtuosity, and energy, the orchestra focuses on rediscovering and performing operatic masterpieces from the Baroque to the Belcanto eras, collaborating with top international singers and performing widely across major European venues. Since 2016, Russian conductor and multi-instrumentalist Maxim Emelyanychev has served as chief conductor. The ensemble’s name derives from Antonio Cesti’s grand 1666 opera Il Pomo d’Oro, a work famed for its extravagant ten-hour production celebrating imperial splendour and musical brilliance.
