Part of Warner Classics' series of recordings of Tchaikovsky's symphonies and symphonic poems by Rostropovich, his first major success in the West as a conductor.
Mstislav Rostropovich (1927–2007) was the most influential cellist of the 20th century, profoundly expanding the instrument’s repertoire through his artistry, advocacy, and collaborations. Trained in Moscow under leading teachers, he launched an international career after major competition successes and his London and New York debuts in 1956. His musicianship inspired more than 240 new works by composers including Shostakovich, Britten, and Prokofiev. Exiled in 1974 for political reasons, he became a symbol of artistic freedom. His legacy is preserved in landmark recordings, notably the Bach Cello Suites, major concertos, and chamber works, many made during his long association with EMI Classics.
