Schlagobers (Whipped Cream), Op. 70, is a ballet in two acts with libretto and music by Richard Strauss, composed in 1921–22 and premiered at the Vienna State Opera on 9 May 1924. During his tenure as co-director of the Vienna State Opera with Franz Schalk (1919–1924), Strauss aimed to revitalize the institution’s ballet company in the difficult period following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He engaged choreographer Heinrich Kröller and collaborated on several ballet projects, including revisions and adaptations of earlier and borrowed music. The most ambitious of these was Schlagobers, unveiled as part of the official celebrations marking Strauss’s sixtieth birthday.

Fabien Gabel (born 1975) is a French conductor who began his musical career as a trumpeter, studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. He later held music directorships in Québec and with the Orchestre Français des Jeunes. Currently Music Director of the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, Gabel maintains a major international career, is known for imaginative programming, and was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2020.
