These six flute duets were recently rediscovered in Strasbourg among late eighteenth-century manuscript notebooks. Their composer, Franz Xaver Richter (1709–1789), was born in Moravia and trained at the Mannheim school, where he absorbed influential stylistic developments of the period. Appointed Kapellmeister of Strasbourg Cathedral in 1769, he held this position until his death. Richter’s music reflects a pivotal transition from the Baroque to the pre-Romantic era, often displaying Mozartian characteristics. Several of his works were performed and published in Paris. Mozart, who visited Richter during his stays in Strasbourg, held him in high regard and later named his son Richter in his honour.
Jean-François Alizon is a flautist, educator, and lecturer with a multidisciplinary background in music, theology, and Jungian psychology. After studying at the Strasbourg Conservatory, he earned a master’s degree in Protestant theology from the University of Strasbourg and a soloist diploma in baroque flute from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. He served as a professor at the Strasbourg Conservatory until 2007 and authored the well-regarded book Approaching the Baroque Repertoire on the Flute. Alongside his musical career, he pursued Jungian studies, becoming active in the Strasbourg Jungian Association and lecturing widely. In 2021, he published Jung and Christianity: A Fresh Perspective.
Emilie Pierrel is a flautist specializing in both modern flute and traverso, holding multiple diplomas including the French Diplôme d’État. She began studying the traverso in 2007 and completed advanced training at the Montbéliard Regional Conservatory, earning a DEM with unanimous jury commendation. She later obtained the DNSPM from the Strasbourg Higher Academy of Music and a Master’s degree in performance under Patrick Blanc and Martin Gester. Pierrel has participated in numerous specialist workshops and teaches flute and traverso at the Belfort Regional Conservatory. She performs with various ensembles and co-founded the Les Flûtinades Festival in Alsace.
