Black Rainbow is a deeply personal album in which violinist and vocalist Julija Hartig reflects on identity, belonging, and ancestral heritage. Drawing on her multicultural roots and Yugoslavian upbringing, the project explores themes of migration and cultural memory. The title work, co-created with Akim Moiseenkov, blends violin, voice, live electronics, folk elements, and ancestral recordings to trace three generations of female migration. Works by Janáček, Fazıl Say, and Enescu further illuminate ideas of home, renewal, and shared ancestry. Performed with pianist Reineke Broekhans, the album becomes a poetic meditation on heritage as an enduring inner presence.

Violinist Julija Hartig is an internationally active soloist and chamber musician with a career spanning classical and contemporary repertoire. Trained in Novi Sad and later in Rotterdam and Utrecht, where she graduated cum laude, she has performed with leading orchestras and at major festivals across Europe, the Americas, and Australia. An Edison Award winner, she is renowned for her expressive intensity, refined technique, and close collaborations with contemporary composers, many of whom have written works for her. Her recordings include the acclaimed Dark Velvet and Black Rainbow. Hartig is based in the Netherlands and plays a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin.
