Alexej Gerassimez presents Black Mountain, his latest album and first to feature his own compositions for percussion and orchestra. Recorded live in May 2025 with the NDR Radiophilharmonie under the direction of Gordon Hamilton, the album traces a compelling journey through archaic rhythms, expansive orchestral textures, and intimate chamber music passages. Inspired by Gerassimez’s concept of “Elements of Drums,” the program explores the fundamental materials of percussion—water, wood, stone, metal, and skin—and their evolution into symphonic sound worlds. More than a recording, Black Mountain serves as an artistic reflection on transformation, curiosity, and the boundless expressive possibilities of sound.

Alexej Gerassimez (born 1987 in Essen) is a German solo percussionist and composer recognized for his international career and artistic versatility. Educated at the conservatories of Cologne, Berlin, and Munich, he won the prestigious TROMP Percussion Competition in 2010, along with the Audience and Press Prizes. He has performed with leading European ensembles, including the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, as well as internationally in the United States, Japan, and New Zealand. In 2022, he gave the New Zealand premiere of John Psathas’s Leviathan, further affirming his reputation as a dynamic performer and advocate for contemporary percussion repertoire.
