For his final project as Music Director of the Tonkunstler Orchestra, Yutaka Sado conducts Gustav Mahler’s monumental Eighth Symphony, a vast and visionary work famously dubbed the “Symphony of a Thousand” at its premiere. Uniting the medieval hymn Veni, creator spiritus with the closing scene from Goethe’s Faust II, Mahler forges profound musical connections across a millennium, creating an overwhelming celebration of creative spirit and artistic inspiration. Expansive in scale and transcendent in ambition, the symphony calls for immense orchestral and choral forces. Performed with distinguished soloists and outstanding choirs, this interpretation marks a monumental and symbolic farewell for Sado.

Yutaka Sado is one of Japan’s leading conductors, serving as Chief Conductor of the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich since 2015/16 and Music Director of the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra from 2023. A former assistant to Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa, he won major prizes in Besançon (1989) and the Leonard Bernstein Competition (1995). Born in Kyoto in 1961, Sado has led the Hyogo Performing Arts Center and its orchestra since 2005 and enjoys wide popularity in Japan, notably through large-scale performances of Beethoven’s Ninth. Internationally, he has held posts with the Orchestre Lamoureux and conducted leading European and American orchestras. His extensive discography includes major symphonic works by Mahler, Bruckner, Brahms, Strauss, and Bernstein.
