This album brings together the three surviving violin concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed during his Köthen period (1717–1723), a time marked by prolific instrumental writing. Reflecting the influence of Italian masters such as Antonio Vivaldi and Arcangelo Corelli, the concertos follow the traditional fast–slow–fast structure for strings and basso continuo. The album also includes Sonata BWV 1037, now attributed to Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, once thought to be Bach’s work. Performed by Nathan Milstein, whose repertoire centered on Baroque and Romantic music, this carefully remastered edition preserves the warmth and nuance of the original analog sound.

Born in Odessa on 31 December 1903, Nathan Milstein emerged from a cultured, middle-class background to become one of the twentieth century’s most refined violinists. He studied with Pyotr Stoliarsky and later Leopold Auer, receiving both solid technical training and artistic polish. After enduring hardship following the Russian Revolution, he gained support from Alexander Glazunov and formed lasting friendships with Vladimir Horowitz and Gregor Piatigorsky. Emigrating to the United States in 1928, he built an international career distinguished by stylistic elegance, intellectual curiosity, and a deep affinity for Johann Sebastian Bach, while maintaining residences in Europe until his death in London in 1992.
