Nello Santi (1931–2020) was a distinguished Italian conductor renowned for his lifelong dedication to the Italian operatic tradition. Closely associated with the Zürich Opera House for six decades and a regular presence at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, he conducted more than 400 performances there between 1962 and 2000. Celebrated for his interpretations of Verdi and Puccini, Santi adhered to the disciplined style of Arturo Toscanini, emphasizing fidelity to the score and sensitive collaboration with singers. Known for conducting from memory, he enjoyed international acclaim and was affectionately called “Papa Santi.” He died in Zürich at age 88.
