In The Light reveals Keith Jarrett’s compositional voice as inseparable from his gifts as performer and improviser. This ambitious double album of orchestral and chamber works highlights his fluid movement between density and lyricism. Metamorphosis for flute and strings, featuring flutist Willi Freivogel, stands out for its pastoral beauty and textural inventiveness. Other notable pieces include Short Piece for Guitar and Strings with Ralph Towner and the expansive In The Cave, In The Light. While not every work is equally compelling, the album’s stylistic breadth and experimental spirit offer profound insight into Jarrett’s multifaceted artistry.

Keith Jarrett (born 1945, Allentown, Pennsylvania) is a pioneering pianist whose career bridges jazz and classical traditions. A child prodigy with classical roots, he emerged in the 1960s alongside Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis before launching a landmark association with ECM Records through Facing You (1971). His improvised solo concerts, most famously The Köln Concert, redefined piano performance. Jarrett also led influential ensembles, including the long-running Standards Trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. An acclaimed interpreter of Bach, Mozart, and Shostakovich, he ceased performing in 2018 due to health issues, though archival releases continue to affirm his singular artistic legacy.
